Guidebook

    Facts
  • Every year, more than 5,000 teens die from alcohol-related injuries; approximately 2,000 of these deaths involve impaired driving.
  • Seven in 10 illegal underage drinkers report binge drinking.
  • The majority of high school seniors do not view binge drinking as risky.
  • The majority of teens point to their parents as a main reason for saying no to alcohol.
    Parents and Prevention
  • Talk to your child about your expectations for no drinking. Talk to other parents so you’re all sending the same message.
  • Make sure your child has an alcohol-free plan for the evening and make sure you know it.
  • Know who is driving when your child goes out. If you’re uncomfortable with the driver or the situation, arrange for other transportation options.
    In the Community
  • Send sports anchors, DJs and other popular station personalities to schools to participate in assemblies that send a positive message about abstaining from alcohol.
  • Promote and support the National Organization for Youth Safety, an organization committed to enhancing safe and healthy lifestyles through youth empowerment and leadership.
    • 50 Best Award 50 $1,000 scholarships will be given to local youth organizations with winning traffic safety projects. The safety project needs to occur in May and can be submitted for a chance to win at www.noys.org.
    • Act Out Loud Contest 20 teams were selected in February 2009 for having the best teen traffic safety projects. They can be followed online at www.actoutloud.org and voted on from May 11 – 22. The team with the most votes wins $10,000 to invest in future youth traffic safety efforts.
    On the Air
  • Interview teachers, parents, police, doctors, emergency room personnel, teens and others about the extent of underage drinking in the community. Use clips from the interviews in PSAs and news stories throughout graduation season.
  • Interview local teens about their plans for the future after graduation.
